Sippin’ and Dippin’ this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day seems like a good excuse to take a day or night for expressing love, sipping champagne, dining by candlelight, and having some, or too much, chocolate. Sometimes I like chocolate covered pretzels and other years I choose chocolate covered strawberries.

When I think of Valentine’s Day, I think of a bubble bath by candlelight while sipping champagne followed by a romantic dinner by candlelight with some bossa nova playing in the background. 🎶🎵🎷

Thinking about this reminds me of one of the most romantic ways my husband, Bob surprised me. It was close to 10 pm and I had just walked in the door from a cross-country business meeting. I noticed the lights were low but dismissed it because it was getting close to bedtime.

What didn’t seem normal was the trail of rose petals leading from the door to the hallway that leads to the master bedroom.  Uh oh, I thought to myself. While I was really excited to be home I was not exactly feeling amorous after a 6 hour flight and 90 minute drive…”gross” was more along the lines of what I was feeling.

However, I wasn’t going to be the party pooper after Bob went to the effort of his rose petal trail…

Plot twist!

I followed the rose petals into the master bedroom, it was dark and the bed was still made. Hmmm

I kept walking and opened the door to the master bath and was greeted by a big old bathtub of bubbles surrounded by candles. Bob’s face lit up with pride in reaction to the joy on my face. He handed me a glass of champagne and told me to relax and enjoy while he unpacked my luggage.

Bob is very thoughtful and romantic and has created many magical moments, but for some reason, this stands out. Maybe because it was completely unexpected or maybe it was because he locked in my love for him that night.

Anyway, I like Valentine’s Day because it seems like a good excuse to be extra thoughtful, romantic, or down right sexy!

This year with the pandemic going on, a romantic getaway or decadent dinner out is not on the itinerary, but a combination of being extra thoughtful, romantic, and sexy still is!

I’m happy to share what I’m doing to make it happen…

The first thing I do for an extra special day/night such as a birthday/anniversary or holiday is to grab a pen and paper and write down what would make it ideal.

I write down the “vibe” I’m going for which helps with decor, music, food, gifts etc. For this Valentine’s Day, the vibe is swanky fun.

I’m imagining lots of candles, mood music, and turning our sunroom into a swanky, jazz club vibe.

For dinner, I will put on a sexy dress and glam up my makeup like it was February 2020 (pre-covid).

Cocktail hour will include champagne, shrimp cocktail, and a cheese plate.

Dinner will be my favorite, “steak and cake” –filet with a crabcake, string beans almondine, and duchess potatoes and our favorite special occasion wine, Duck Horn merlot.

For dessert I’m going to try my hand at chocolate fondue, it seems like a good solution in the event I can’t decide between pretzels or strawberries!

I’ll prep everything the day before so the actual cooking is simple and easy. Bob will cook the steaks on the grill while I do the crabcakes and string beans almondine.

The decor:

Bob had the idea to set up a table for two in our sunroom for a special New Year’s Eve dinner which we didn’t do because we were with Bob’s dad who passed away minutes after midnight and is now reunited with his forever valentine.

However, it doesn’t mean I can’t swipe his good idea for Valentine’s day!

I won’t get too crazy, but I will set it up so it feels like we are in a romantic restaurant with all the feels…did someone say dancefloor?

Valentine’s Day is still 3 days away and while other bloggers would have staged it for the article, I want to wait until Sunday, February 14th to enjoy everything I have planned.

I will update this article with pictures after Sunday and let you know if I was able to pull off the swanky-jazz-club vibe I’m envisioning.

Follow me on Instagram @FashionSHEsta or Facebook @ReginaViscount-King and I will document how I set it up and whatever other random things I think might be helpful.
